Moon Sun Fire | It’s Time to Bloom

Moon Sun Fire

Over this last weekend in April, I took part in a 3 day Kundalini, Sattva and meditation experience with It’s Time to Bloom. This journey, tapping into a new experience, was enlightening as it created strength and emotions in me I didn’t know existed. By channeling the planetary elements you harness awareness and focus onto the root of a healing process. When you’re in a room full of yogi’s, the energy has run wild, there was an aura of light around everyone.

What is Kundalini? Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan ® is also known as the Yoga of Awareness; its focus is on self-awareness and delivering an experience of your highest consciousness. The technology of Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan ® is a science of the mind and body, to elevate the spirit, which has no boundaries, no discrimination. Therefore it is for everyone, universal and nondenominational.

Now, I’m not a connoisseur of yoga, but I appreciate using the weight and strength of your breath and body to practice or to meditate. This wasn’t a $1 Yoga Mat for Sale situation by any means, I felt as though I finally learned what discipline is. Once I learned that I would be sitting cross-legged for some time I had to really push past the pain and listen to what my head and what my heart was telling me. Don’t get me wrong, I think I screamed internally after I lost all feeling in my legs during one of the kundalini sequences on the first day. However, going into the second day, I knew what to expect, and I persevered through the meditation…one of which turned out to be a 31 min sequence (!). I must say, that throughout this weekend, I feel as though I have been transformed. It wasn’t until Day 3, that I truly felt the significance of this workshop and the energy in the room was so powerful you could feel everyone vibrating next to you.

I’ve been able to hone in on my breath and my ability to try something new and educate myself. The number one thing I took away from this experience is to have an open mind, believe in myself and know that there’s something bigger than just being. The power we have within is so strong, I feel humbled and honoured to have been apart of it.

Here is a quick recap and few interviews I’ve compiled over the weekend:

The Future of Fashion Is Code, Not Couture

It’s hard to believe that this dress was built using a 3D printer. Designer Francis Bitonti has shifted how we look at the idea of creation. He is stepping outside of the box, throwing away the needle and thread (probably his Singer* as well). By teaming up with MakerBot, a New York-based company founded in January 2009, Bitonti has created a masterpiece of design entitled Cloud which was unveiled on April 4:

The capsule collection offers four decorative housewares, or rather, the code for these items. By modifying one aspect of the code, consumers can decide how much noise or relief appears on the surface of a vase or bowl, resulting in a customized purchase.

Francis Bitonti Studio will directly sell data files of 3D printables, beginning with home goods April 2014 and will transition into accessories Fall 2014.   Each item is customizable, and consumers have the option to use a sliding scale to adjust the look of the piece.

“Our aim is to embed the properties of digital media into physical realities,“ explained founder Francis Bitonti.  “We’ve created products that are hackable, shareable, and downloadable, which enables us to bring the consumer customizable, locally produced products on demand and without excess waste, resulting in a low-carbon foot print.”  After 3D printing, the product can be picked up directly from the hub producer or it can be locally shipped.  All products are designed to be printed on a MakerBot® Replicator® Desktop 3D Printer.

The show last night featuring Anika Designs took my breathe away! From the couture, the performance and the music, Anika sure knows how to put on a show. Styled by Amandeep Matharu of Deep Mode new just the amount of sass to put on a good show!

It’s always nice to have that East Indian flare to a show as big as Western Canada Fashion Week. Below is a video of Javeda By Aman Dhalay, a Calgary based designer who has wowed the crowd at last night’s show.

Hair Affair

Eenie…Meenie…Miney…Nevermind, you all need a hair cut!

Last night I had the privilege to try out Christina Dominelli Salon! I knew it would be glamorous based on my friend Nick’s somewhat bias opinion, but I had to check it out for myself. It wasn’t hard to find, located at 10557-124 Street, this salon has everything you could possibly want and need!

As far as first impressions go, my initial wide-eye moment was the floor to ceiling windows upon the entrance letting in so much natural light, you feel like you’re outside! With scented candles greeting you and an incredible playlist, I felt right at home. My initial consult with Nick was a funny one, with long hair like mine, I’m the perfect canvas for stylists to chop it all off and make a masterpiece of angles and colour.

However, my first words were “please keep the length!!” with the most terrified look on my face.

After he rolled his eyes, he agreed, but not without first selling me onto a hair rejuvenation treatment by Shu Uemura that would make my hair sparkle, retain moisture and look dazzling, of course it’s coupled with an incredible 15-20 minute head massage that could put anyone to sleep.

The shampoo station was like a mini spa, the most incredible massage chairs (not the tacky ones you’d find at a nail salon), Tom Dixon pendent lighting, and the feeling like you’re going to be in good hands for the rest of the day. Nick has had some incredible training, to get to those pressure points in my head and neck, would make anyone’s headache or knot in their neck disappear!  (Thank you!)

One of the highlights is in the centre of the salon, no doubt what would make this place event cooler is the built-in stage coupled with a runway on hydraulics! So you can count on the salon to host many fashion shows showing off their incredible talent!

And lastly, what I love most is their mission:

Mission StatementTo bring innovation and inspiration to every artist that walks through the door.
To have our guests feel a sense of well-being and comfort.
To be consciously aware of our health, well-being, environmental and ethical responsibilities.
To produce innovative leaders and provide quality in our craft.
To be the artist that takes you on a journey and leaves you with an experience.
To always represent dignity and passion.
Most of all…
To always respect the beauty in it all…
and never forget to be a little CRAZY…

Serendipity

We know it’s snowy and windy out there but that shouldn’t stop you from being fashionable at a fashionable launch party!

Head to Bamboo Ballroom this evening after work to check out this new Edmonton based designer Kelsey McIntyre. There will be refreshments to quench your thirst, a photo-booth and of course, all of Serendipity’s new Spring/Summer collection!

The Serendipity line is, indeed, serendipitous. Creator, Kelsey McIntyre’s love of all things vintage and girly is reflected perfectly in her collection of beautiful dresses, feminine skirts, chic tops and perfectly fitted pants. The Serendipity girl loves to picnic on a warm summer day, and curl up with a good book and coffee when the snow begins to fall. She is unashamedly girly, and captures a sense of romance and magic in her intricately detailed garments.
